Why create thumbnail sketches?
Hi friends! Today I’m going to talk about why I always utilize thumbnail sketches in my illustration process. Everyone has their own process, but here are the two main reasons why I create thumbnail sketches.
Thumbnails are a quick way to establish good composition. By laying down simple shapes in my thumbnails I am able to quickly discover what composition works best for my ideas.
Thumbnails help me stay loose. Doing quick thumbnail sketches helps prevent me from staying pinned down to one or two specific ideas. If I invest too much time in refining my sketches early on then I am more likely to stick to those initial ideas instead allowing myself to experiment and working to my full creative potential.
So tell me, are you an avid thumbnail sketcher or do you like dive right on into your canvas?
